“Every five years in in California
And now a national past-time.
Accuse, harass, and threaten undocumented folk,
scapegoat the paper-thin economy,
while dining on hand-chopped salad, broke-back strawberries, and spilt coffee.”
SANKA (2003) is a series of untraditional screen prints talking back to conservative efforts to scapegoat undocumented populations in California, dating back to 1994’s infamous Proposition 187. The series alludes to the residual, casual racism sanctioned by upper middle class people living in Los Angeles.
